Permit Applications

The Town of Beaumont inspects and approves design and construction of new buildings and renovations to ensure they comply with all relevant acts, statutes and bylaws.

If you are planning any new building, renovating a building or changing the use of a building or land, you will need a permit from the Town of Beaumont.
Talk to us as you prepare your plans so we can help. We’ll tell you about any other approvals that may affect your plans or costs.

Meeting with us early can help you avoid surprises and help ensure that your project goes quickly and smoothly.

Development Permits

If you are planning to construct a new building, alter an existing building or change the use of a property, you will need a development permit. A development permit is written approval from the Town that ensures what you are planning to do complies with the Land Use Bylaw.

Building Permits

You may need a building permit in addition to your development permit. The Alberta Building Code regulates methods and materials used in building construction, the occupancy and the use of buildings and equipment to safeguard the health and safety of occupants.

At time of application you will need to provide plans showing the details of the work to be done. For most projects such as finishing a basement or building a deck you may require only a hand-drawn sketch. For an addition to a house or commercial building, you may require drawings prepared by an architect or engineer.

Electrical, Plumbing and Gas Permits

Depending on the extent of the project you are undertaking, you may also require an electrical, plumbing or gas permit.

Whoever does the work takes out the permit. If you are having a contractor undertake your electrical, plumbing or gas installation, that person should apply for the permit, which makes him responsible to ensure that the work is done to code.

Electrical, plumbing and gas permits can be obtained through the Town Office in person or through Superior Safety Codes.

Electrical permits are required whenever any new wires are being installed. You do not need a permit for low voltage items such as security systems, doorbells, thermostats or patio lights. If you own and reside at the premises where the work is being carried out, you may take out the permit to do the work yourself or the work must be carried out by a person who is a master electrician.

Plumbing permits are required if new fixtures are being added, including any new drains. You also need a permit if you are making changes to the plumbing equipment. You do not need a permit to replace existing faucets, sinks, toilets, etc. If you own and reside at the premises where the work is being carried out, you may take out the permit to do the work yourself, otherwise the work must be carried out by a person who has a certificate of proficiency, such as a journeyman plumber.

Gas permits are required when an installation, alteration or addition is made to any gas installation. If new venting is required for a furnace, for example, a permit is required. You do not need a permit to replace a residential gas dryer or range provided there are no changes to the pipe or venting system. If you own and reside at the premises where the work is being carried out, you may take out the permit to do the work yourself otherwise, it is issued to a holder of a certificate of proficiency such as a journeyman gasfitter.
